Self discipline destroys all impurities, perfecting the body, mind and senses, so that consciousness functions freely and attains divinity. (Patanjali, Yoga Sutra II.43)
Iyengar yoga
B.K.S. Iyengar was born in 1918 in Bellur, India. A disciple of Sri Krishnamacharya from the age of 16, he taught his first yoga course at the age of 18. Married at 25 and a father of 6 children, B.K.S. Iyengar dedicated himself to yoga and to his family with total integrity and immense determination. He wrote his best seller "Light on Yoga" in 1966 and opened his center, the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India in 1975 where he has been teaching until his death on August 20th, 2014 at the age of 95. His daughter Geeta who left us in 2018 has contibuted immensely to adapting yoga to women's life conditions. His son Prashant and his grand-daughter Abijata continue to transmit his teachings with great integrity.
Thanks to his numerous travels and valuable books translated in many languages which have become yoga classics, his method is being taught throughout the world. Iyengar Associations exist in more than 60 countries in order to transmit this precious knowledge of human nature authentically and truthfully. B.K.S. Iyengar has trained numerous worldwide famous teachers and inspired many Western methods.
Iyengar yoga is characterized by a particular attention to alignment, symetry and precision in practicing postures. The student aims to integrate the philosophical principles of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali in each layer of his body (physical, physiological, mental, intellectual and spiritual).
The use of props such as blankets, blocs, belts, bolsters and chairs allows each practitioner to benefit more deeply from each posture and work more efficiently at improving body imbalances durably.
This method is adapted to all ages of life.
